PAPUA NEW GUINEA’S RELATIONSHIP WITH MALAYSIA

Papua New Guinea and Malaysia enjoy a positive and constructive relationship since establishing diplomatic relations on 12 July 1975.

Since then, the bilateral relation between the two countries has developed to a level whereby wide spectrums of activities for cooperation have been established that are mutually beneficial.

The PNG High Commission in Malaysia seeks to build, broaden and strengthen links between the two countries in the years ahead.

The PNG High Commission in Malaysia is also responsible for countries of concurrent accreditation namely, the Kingdom of Thailand, Cambodia and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA’S RELATIONS WITH THAILAND

Papua New Guinea and the Kingdom of Thailand enjoy a constructive relation since establishing diplomatic relations on 14 May 1976. Existing Cooperative Arrangements

Since then, the bilateral relation between the two countries has developed to a level whereby a wide spectrums of activities for cooperation are been negotiated for mutual benefit.

The two countries are currently negotiating series of important bilateral arrangements including the Investment Promotion & Protection Agreement (IPPA), technical Cooperation Agreement, Double Tax Treaty (DTT), air services Agreement and MOU on Fisheries Cooperation.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA’S RELATIONS WITH LAO PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC

Papua New Guinea and the Lao Peoples’ Democratic Republic formalized diplomatic relations on 6 May 1976. Over the years, there have been limited interactions between the two countries, thus this reflects the current status of relationship between the two countries.

However, contacts have been mostly through multilateral for which the two countries are members, including the UN and its Agencies, ASEAN (AMM), ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) and Non Aligned Movement (NAM).

To strengthen meaningful relations, PNG is exploring to establish through exchange of bilateral visits at Ministerial and Officials as well as at private levels trade, investment & economic relations and technical cooperation.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA’S RELATIONS WITH CAMBODIA

Papua New Guinea and Cambodia formalized diplomatic relations on 7 October 1996 May 1976. Over the years, there has been limited interaction between the two countries, thus reflects the current status of relationship between the two countries.

To strengthen meaningful relations, PNG is exploring to establish through exchange of bilateral visits at Ministerial and Officials as well as at private levels, trade, investment & economic relations and technical cooperation.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA’S RELATIONS WITH INTERNATIONAL & REGIONAL ORGANIZATIONS

In addition to the bilateral responsibilities, the PNG High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia also covers number of Regional and International Organizations that have their Head Offices based in Kuala Lumpur. These include the Association of Natural Rubber Producing Countries (ANRPC), INFOFISH and Asia-Pacific Regional Broadcasting Office.

The Mission’s main responsibility is to monitor developments on the work of the regional organizations on issues of mutual interest to PNG and report to relevant PNG Authorities and agencies.

The Mission is also responsible for United Nations Economic and Social Commission of Asia-Pacific (UNESCAP) matters and the High Commissioner is the Papua New Guinea Permanent Representative.
